Course overview
In winter it is the road that changes, not the driver: grip falls, stopping distances grow, visibility drops, and the worst sections are not always visible in advance. The course covers how to adjust speed, following distance and control inputs to match, how to prepare a vehicle for the cold, and how to make a go or no-go decision from the weather. The practical part is spent driving under instructor supervision.

Entry requirements
A valid driving licence of the appropriate category. The practical part requires a roadworthy vehicle with complete documentation, agreed with the client before training begins.

- Drive smoothly: acceleration, braking, steering
- Recognise high-risk sections and hidden ice

Course syllabus
The programme has a theory part and a practical part. Their length is agreed with the client.
- Winter road hazards
- Snow, ice and low-grip surfaces
- Reduced visibility: snowfall, fog and short days
- Hidden ice and high-risk sections
- Increased stopping distance
- Safe speed and following distance
- Smooth acceleration, braking and steering
- Vehicle safety systems and the limits of what they can do
- Winter tyres: condition and pressure
- Battery and cold-weather readiness
- Lights, wipers and washer fluid
- Cooling system and pre-winter checks
- Planning a route around the weather
- Go or no-go decisions, and postponing non-essential travel
- Emergency equipment carried in winter
- What to do if stranded in severe conditions
The session is spent driving under instructor supervision. The exercises and the site are agreed with the client.
